The
Instructors
Kyoshi
Teller, an 9th Degree Black belt and student of Grand-Master
Peter Urban, began his training at the Zen Gojo Temple
in Brooklyn N.Y., under Shihan Vincent Merenda. He moved
to Florida in 1978 (after receiving his Nidan from Grand
Master Urban) to continue his college education. That
same year, Kyoshi Teller established the first Karate
Club at the University of West Florida, and began teaching
USA Goju Karate. After receiving his Bachelor of Science
degree and Master of Science degree from the University
of West Florida, Kyoshi moved to Gainesville Florida.
and opened the Gainesville Dojo. Classes at the Dojo are
taught by Kyoshi Teller an his highly qualified black
belt instructors.
NOTE:
(U S A Goju karate was founded by Grand Master Peter Urban.
Peter Urban, one of the founders of karate on the East
Coast opened his first Goju Ryu karate school m Union
City, NJ in September 1955. In 1960 Urban moved to New
York City where he opened his famous "Chinatown Dojo"
and began teaching his USA Goju karate. Peter Urban studied
under Gogen "the cat" Yamaguchi (Goju Ryu), Richard Kim
(Shorinji Ryu and Matsutatsu (Mas) Oyama (Kyokushinkai).
The
Dojo
The Dojo In order to aid in the development of our members
our dojo is equipped with a balance of modem and traditional
training apparatus (ranging from Makiwara to heavy bags
and free weights) Our dojo is also equipped with showers
to further convenience our members Floor space at our
school is divided into five areas: a padded martial arts
area, a boxing ring, a heavy bag area, a grappling area
and a weight room I Members are encouraged to utilize
every aspect of the facilitic.
Kids
Program
At the Gainesville Dojo we offer a fun and comprehensive
children's program offered three days per week. In the
class, kids learn valuable life skills such as social
interaction, respect, and focus. They also gain increased
motor controls, confidence, and self-awareness. These
elements of our curriculum, as well as our highly qualified
instructors make our kids classes an experience your child
will value for the rest of their life.
Benefits
USA Goju has a wide array of physical and mental benefits
for it's practitioners. Physically, our members are taught
a balanced program of stretching, calistenics, kata, and
kumite. This results in increased strength, flexibility,
and agility. Through meditation, kata , and other psychological
drills, Our students gain the mental benefits of stress
control, focus, confidence and awareness.
